Wheelchair Stair Lifts
If you or a loved one are confined to a
wheelchair, then you will know only too well how stairs and steps present a serious access problem. When
those stairs exist at home, then this problem can often seem insurmountable, forcing you to either move house or
spend money on expensive renovations. Thankfully wheelchair stair lifts are a
cost-effective alternative that can have you staying in your home longer while still living
independently.
What is a Wheelchair
Stair Lift?
A wheelchair stair lift, also known as an
incline platform lift, is designed to carry a person in a wheelchair up and down staircases, safely and
securely. The passenger wheels their chair onto the platform and with the simple press of a
button, the platform ramps are raised to form a barrier front and back preventing the wheelchair from rolling over the
edge. Barrier arms front and back are automatically locked into position for additional security. Only
once the ramps and barrier arms are engaged is the lift permitted to move up or down the metal tracking
system affixed to the staircase treads. These lifts can be installed on any configuration of stairwell or ramp,
inside or outside with minimal, if any, structural changes required.
Features of Wheelchair Stair Lifts
Electric stair lifts for wheelchairs
operate in much the same manner as standard stair
chair lifts and use an electric battery powered
motor. Wheelchair platform lifts are designed so that they can be operated by the passenger
independently but can also be operated via remote control. Incline platform lifts are fitted with a
pressure sensitive undertray that will automatically stop the lift if it senses an obstruction. Some units
can also be operated manually in the unlikely event of mechanical failure. When not in use, the lift platform can
be folded up out of the way so that the stairway is not obstructed for other users.
Installation of Wheelchair Stair Lifts
As with all handicap stair lifts, wheelchair
platform lifts need to be customized to suit the location as well as the users needs. A home
evaluation should be carried out prior to purchase to provide you with the necessary information about costs,
options available and positioning of the lift. Your supplier should also be able to tell you if there are any
regulatory requirements concerning wheelchair lift installations in your area. Installation of wheelchair
lifts is best carried out by a qualified installer.
Cost of Wheelchair Stair Lifts
Handicap stair lift prices range from $5000
to $25000 depending on the length and type of track and complexity of installation. For those
requiring a standard straight lift installation and looking for a cheaper stairlift, ask your supplier if they
can source a used wheelchair lift to suit. Medicare does not cover the cost of wheelchair stair lifts
however some health insurance companies may do so. Check with your insurance provider
first.
