Stair Lift Measuring Guide

If you choose to purchase a stair lift you will be given the option to have someone come to your home and measure up for you or alternatively you can save some money and do the measuring yourself.

How to Measure

USMedicalSupplies.com are suppliers of AmeriGlide Stair Lifts and provide a comprehensive guide to measuring up for your stairlift installation.  We have summarised the 8 easy steps below but you can view the complete measuring guide here.  You will need a strong metal tape measure and a pencil. A ruler may also be useful.

The first thing you will need to decide is which side of the stairwell you want the lift to be on. Because AmeriGlide stair lifts are attached to the floor you can choose to have the lift on any side even if there is no wall or rail. Stand at the bottom of the stairwell and look up to decide whether the lift will be on the left or right side.

Remember to always measure twice. Measurements should be in feet or inches.

Step 1. This is the most critical measurement. Standing at the top of the stairs, extend your tape measure from the top of the stairs to the bottom landing letting it rest on the edge of each tread along the way. The tape measure should not sag or bend. Record the distance from the edge of the upper landing to where the tape meets the bottom landing.

Step 2. Measure from the edge of the upper landing to the edge of the first stair tread at the bottom. Make sure the tape measure does not sag or bend.

Step 3. Measure the width of the stairs treads. Make sure to measure only the useable width. This means that if the tread extends past the rail on either side, do not include the extra width in your measurement.

Step 4. Measure from the edge of the first step at the bottom to the wall or the door or other obstruction.

Step 5. Measure the height of one step. If the step is rounded, a ruler, piece of cardboard or even a book can be used as a guide.

Step 6.  Measure the depth of one tread. Use a ruler, cardboard or book as a guide.

Step 7. As an additional check, measure from the edge of one step to the edge of the next step. Make sure the tape measure does not sag or bend.

Step 8.  Measure the distance from the edge of the top step to the nearest door, wall or other obstruction at the top of the stairs.

We have also included a step by step video which takes you through each step in detail.
