Stair Lift FAQs
Buying and installing a stair lift is a big decision. With that in
mind, we have put together some answers to some frequently asked
questions in order to help you make your decision a little less complicated.
Can I install a stair lift
myself?
AmeriGlide stair lifts are the only lifts of their kind that are built
for homeowner installation. Other brands must usually be professionally installed. It should take you around 2-3
hours to install an AmeriGlide stair lift yourself and most people find it relatively easy and straightforward to
do so. You can check out our measuring guide to get an idea of what is required for self installation.
What is best - an electric stair lift or
battery stair lift?
Electric stair lifts run off mains power and so
will stop working in the event of a power outage. A battery powered stair lift uses a battery that will need to be
replaced at the end of its lifespan. The general consensus is that if you live alone and are unable to negotiate
stairs without the lift, then a battery operated model is recommended for safety. If however, you will be using the
lift for more than three round trips per day then you can expect to be replacing the battery every year or even
less. See more details on this
here.
Do I need a lot of room to install a stair
lift?
Measurements will vary depending on the make of stair lift used but
the track on an AmeriGlide stair lift will take up 11.5 inches of your staircase. When the seat is folded up it
will use 14 inches of space. Bear in mind that if you purchase a Heavy Duty model, then the seat does not fold
up.
Does the stair lift have a weight
limit?
Again this will vary depending on the brand but the typical AmeriGlide
stair lift has a lifting capacity of 300 pounds. The Heavy Duty model has a weight capacity of 500 pounds. Each
stair lift is designed to carry one person at a time.
What is required to maintain a stair lift?
Most stair lifts need very little maintenance. A simple light greasing
of the track every 6 months or so should be enough to keep everything running smoothly.
How safe are AmeriGlide stair lifts to
use?
-
AmeriGlide stair lifts comply with all the appropriate codes and standards
of the industry. Safety features include:
-
Footrest safety sensor to stop the lift if it encounters an
obstruction.
-
Swivel safety switch to ensure the seat is locked in the proper position
before lifting.
-
Safety belt attached to the seat
-
Cable tension safe guards that will stop the lift if the cable loses any
tension
-
Limit switches that automatically stop the lift in the same place at the
top and bottom of the stairs every time.
-
Pressure controls that when released will stop the lift moving.
